Tenjin Matsuri 2014

I love summer festivals. Being an entertainer, I’m usually working on one of the boats or acting as an MC for groups of foreign visitors but this year I went to the festival with a friend. It was nice to view it from the other side and enjoy some food and drinks from the stalls, (veggie options only for me). As usual, there was a huge turnout - thousands of people. It’s great to see how Japan has kept the festival spirit alive for so many years and I’m thrilled that many people get dressed up in yukatas, even down to the little kids. It creates such a colourful picture.
I bought two new yukatas in the afternoon and had a hard time deciding which one to wear that evening. I decided to go with the purple & turquoise one. I’ll save the other one for the next festival.
Here’s a little background information about the festival.

  • It’s one of the three top festivals in Japan.
  • It takes place in Osaka every summer.
  • There’s a land procession and a boat procession.
  • The festival began more than a thousand years ago.
